Hohner Rocket vs Seydel 1847 Silver

Hohner's Rocket and Seyde's 1847 Silver harmonicas may not traditionally have been direct competitors on price, but as Hohner's RRPs have crept up over the last year, it's now not too far from the more premium Seydel harp. Let's see if it can justify this position and determine which of these two models may be suitable for your needs.

In terms of similarities, both harps are the most expensive standard tuned diatonics with ABS combs that their respective manufacturers produce. They both have plastic combs and a traditional cover place design, which is folded inwards before the edge, rather than being full length, like a Session Steel.

When viewd side by side, however, differences soon become apparent. The Rocket has much larger holes, but the overall width of the playing area is less than the 1847 Silver. This is achieved by the Rocket's having very small gaps between the holes; much less than would be possible with a wood comb. This enables the Hohner harp to be both loud and very quick to play, although beginners may find it harder to sound single notes clearnly with this design.

The Seydel, in comparison, has a slightly slower feel to it, and the non-recessed reed plates can make it a less comfortable harp for some players. It hits back, though, with a more rounded tone, and greater longevity from the stainess steel reeds, which typically outlast the brass reeds fitted to the Rocket by a considerable amount.

The Rocket is the louder of the two harmonicas, and will suit hard playing blues harpists who want a relatively inexpensive instrument that can easily compete for volume with guitars and drums. The 1847 Silver is a slightly more nuance instrument that will suite a wider range of musical genres and is dynamically a little more subtle.
