A – harmonic minor is a minor key that has the name notes as A natural minor, except for the seventh note, which is raised by one semitone.
A harmonic minor scale is represented by the following notation:
- 1, 2, ♭3, 4, 5, ♭6, 7, 8
A fairly small number of diatonic harmonicas are available in this tuning – Lee Oskar and Hohner’s Marine Band being the most popular models, although Seydel can also provide this tuning as a custom option on specific diatonic harmonicas.
Due to the raised 7th, this tuning provides an Eastern, and perhaps, exotic sound – great for Eastern European folk music.
It is known as the harmonic minor key as it forms the basis for many harmonies in minor keys.
The harmonica minor scale is not used extensively in Western popular music, but one example of a song that utilises it is Bobby Brown’s My prerogative.
