Harmonica Microphones
The harmonica is a relatively loud instrument acoustically, but if you are playing in a band situation, competing with the drummer and guitarist for volume, a mic and amp are essential tools. You might also want to achieve the classic overdriven blues harp sound of harmonica greats for the 1960s onwards, which is only possible with a great sounding amp and microphone.
What is the Best Type of Microphone for The Harmonica?
Harmonica players have used all types of microphones over the years - sometimes due to expediency more than anything else. However, these days most players have settled on various types of bullet-shaped mic, as they offer the best combination of tone and ergonomics when playing the harmonica.

The BlowsMeAway Bulletini Harmonica Microphone is "The tiny bullet harmonica mic with the great big tone". Blues harp players love bullet-shaped mics, however they can often be too big, heavy and difficult to cup, which is essential for creating a great tone. With the BlowsMeAway Bulletini Harmonica Mic, there's finally a small enough bullet mic with huge tone, thanks to The Heumann Elementtm There have been sub-sized harp mics on the market for years. Some favourite vintage elements - Shure CM and CR's, Shure, Astatic and Brush crystals - don't fit shells much smaller than the traditional "JT30-size" bullets. In order to produce smaller mics, builders resort to using small, inferior elements. Their sound just doesn't measure up to the BlowsMeAway Bulletini Harmonica Microphone. The Bulletini is different, because it uses The Heumann Elementtm. The Heumann Element is a brand new high impedance dynamic element developed specifically for harp players. It is in fact the ONLY element ever developed specifically for harp. It is made from a modern vocal mic element to which I make both mechanical and electrical modifications. It has big, fat tone with plenty of bass. Ronnie Shellist says it reminds him of a vintage Ceramic element but with more output. So far it makes every small amp it has been tested with, including Kalamazoo, Memphis Mini and the Harp Train 10 sound better than anything else I know. The BlowsMeAway Bulletini helps beginners and intermediate players alike sound better, nevertheless pro harp players enjoy it too. Just ask Billy Branch, Jon Gindick, Adam Gussow, Deak Harp, Aki Kumar, JJ Milteau, Darrell Nulisch, Charlie Musselwhite, Mickey Raphael, Andy Santana, Ronnie Shellist, Hank Shreve... and the list keeps on growing! The Bulletizer The Bulletizer - If you use a Shure 545 or SM57, you're not alone. These are wonderful harmonica mics and are in wide use. However their small diameter can make holding and cupping them uncomfortable. Over the last few years Greg, from BlowsMeAway Productions had many customers ask "Can you fit an SM57 or 545 element into one of your wood shells?" The answer is no - the cartridge of these mics is about as long as a typical bullet shell's outside dimension, and then there's a transformer (located in the barrel of the standard mic) and the connector that have to be accommodated. The Bulletizertm is the solution. It gives you a larger surface to grasp and cup, and provides an acoustic chamber inside your cup to bring out the best of the mic's tone. You can even "tune the tone" by varying the position of the mic inside the shell. The Bulletizer's outside diameter is 2 inches, making it very easy to cup, even if you have small hands. By comparison, a JT30 is 2.35 inches in diameter. The Bulletizer is easy to install and remove, and fits very securely on your mic. To achieve this Greg machines each one in his own shop, to very close tolerances for an exact fit. For this reason it does not fit other microphones. It fits Shure SM57, Beta 57 (not Beta57A), 545 and PE54, and BlowsMeAway Ultimate versions of these mics.... Read moreXvive Microphone Wireless System

What are the Advantages of Smaller Bullet Microphones?
Bulletini and Hohner HarpBlaster Mics
At The Harmonica Company we look to source mics that are suited specifically for playing the harmonica. We stock the BlowsMeAway Production Bulletini ("The tiny bullet harmonica mic with the great big tone") The Bulletini is available in two formats - with volume control and without volume control. The former allows the volume to be manipulated at the microphone with no alteration of the tone (something that other microphones struggle to achieve. The non-volume control model is slightly cheaper and is perfect for situations where the player doesn't need to manipulate the volume level (eg when going through a mixing desk controlled by a sound engineer. Both microphones feature the same Heumann element, which gives the fantastic vintage tone for which Blowsmeaway microphones are famous.
Another great microphone that we recommend, at a slightly lower price point, is the Hohner HarpBlaster HB52, which draws on the German brand's years of experience of producing harp mics and combines modern features, such as an XLR output, with vintage design and tone.
