Seydel Saxony vs Deluxe Steel Chromatic

Seydel manufactures a range of 12 hole chromatic harmonicas that use the same basic architecture, but differ in comb and reed plate materials. The Saxony and Deluxe Steel are two such harmonicas. Let's examine the differences between them to help you determine which would best suit your needs.

The dimensions and basic design of both harmonicas are fundamentally the same, but aesthetically and in terms of materials used, they are quite different harmonicas. The most obvious upgrade on the more expensive Saxony is the comb, which is CNC machined alloy, and is consequently heavier and imparts a brighter tone than the acrylic comb on the Deluxe Steel.

A further detail which affects the playing experience is the rounded edges to the mouthpiece that is fitted to the Saxony. This makes it marginally more comfortable, when playing for long periods of time, than the straight edged comb on the Deluxe Steel, and also facilitates fast movement around the harmonica.

Both harps share the same reed plates. Replacement sets for each harmonica have different model numbers, but there is no clear difference between them and the price is identical. Any tonal differences, therefore, are a consequence of the comb material.

From a durability point of view, the Saxony has a more substantial mouthpiece and slide mechanism, making it feel a little more solid in use than the Deluxe Steel. The differences are small, however.

Aesthetically, the Saxony has a slightly more subdued appearance, with its black comb being more muted that the bright orange comb of the Deluxe Steel. The matte cover plates provide the Saxony with an understated classy look, and this is reflected in the overall appearance and sound of this harmonica.

Ultimately, your preference will be determined by the small differences in tone between the two harmonicas, which are somewhat subjective, and, for some, the fact that the Saxony is a little more expensive than the Deluxe Steel.
