Always a great experience dealing with this firm; keen prices, fast delivery and well packaged.
Excellent customer service! My recent purchase required a couple of alterations in details and they were very responsive about it. Despite the changes in the order, the item actually arrived earlier than expected!
Jazz
Jazz harmonica is most commonly associated with the chromatic version of the harmonica, as the major scale, which most Richter tuned diatonics are tuned to, is inherently limiting for a genre that utilises plenty of chromaticism. However, advanced players who have mastered overblows and large bends, are able to achieve full chromaticism on a diatonic harp; players such as Howard Levy, for instance, have shown that the limitations of a 10 hole diatonic can be overcome with expert technique, really opening up new possibilities for what is a relatively simple instrument.

The Seydel De Luxe Chromatic is the entry point to Seydel's chromatic harmonicas and is one of the least expensive German-made chromatics on the market. The basic design of the De Luxe Chromatic is the same as the De Luxe Steel Chromatic, and the reed plates are interchangeable. The main difference is in the reed material; the De Luxe Steel uses stainless steel, which is a feature of many of Seydel's more expensive harmonicas, whilst the standard De Luxe model uses traditional brass reeds. Stainless steel produces a brighter tone and has greater longevity than brass, but many players prefer the feel and sound of brass, and its use in the De Luxe does result in a considerably less expensive harmonica than its big brother. Build quality is as you would expect from the world's oldest harmonica company, and playability and tone are both first rate. An excellent choice of both a first chromatic or a workhorse harmonica for the experienced player. The NONSLIDER Chromatic DE LUXE STEEL - playing chromatically re-thought Is there a chromatic harmonica ... ... with direct tone response like a Blues Harmonica? ... that works WITHOUT slider and WITHOUT valves*? ... on which techniques like bending or overblow are playable? The answer is YES. We named it the NONSLIDER Chromatic DE LUXE STEEL. This instrument is equipped with a newly designed mouthpiece that opens up many new possibilities for players to play chromatically, irrespective of whether they have played a chromatic harmonica or a diatonic blues harmonica before! The NONSLIDER Chromatic is a very reliable instrument that is virtually maintenance free. 48 tuning-stable, stainless steel reeds guarantee a great sound and durability Furthermore, stuck valves or a jammed slider are things of the past. In order to achieve optimal tone responses, the reeds of the LC, LD and LF variants, as well as the C 'Orchestra tuning' are equipped with valves (full and/or half-valving). Bending of certain half-valved notes is still possible - all valved blow notes can additionally be bent down in pitch. Overblows are not playable if the reeds are valved. How does the NONSLIDER Chromatic principle work? With the help of the newly developed double-row mouthpiece, the semitones are reached simply by tilting the instrument. A slight angling down or up is sufficient to reach all chromatic notes by directly playing the corresponding holes on the respective row. The notes on the lower row of holes are the same like in the "slide-pressed position" on standard chromatic harmonicas. The instrument is tilted down or up, or the player changes the position of his lips (pointed-mouth technique/lip-pursing) to reach the right notes. Thus, full chromaticism is achieved without the need for a slide and spring mechanism!... Read moreSeydel Sampler Harmonica C/G

This said, most players who wish to start experimenting with Jazz styles on the harmonica would be best served by a chromatic harp. Chromatics have two sets of reed plates tuned a semitone apart, and feature a button activated slide that directs air to the relevant reed(s). This means that not only is full chromaticism easily available, with no special techniques required, but also that rapid trills can be produced through quick manipulation of the slide. You can hear this in many of Stevie Wonder's harmonica solos, which also feature extensive use of vibrato.
Top choices for jazz harmonica are the Hohner CX12 Black and Jazz, Super 64, the Suzuki SCX range and Seydel's chromatic harmonicas. Players will want to look for at least 12 holes, with 16 being preferable, as they provide greater melodic range.
Best Diatonic Harmonica Jazz
To overcome the limitations of the 10 hole diatonic harp when playing in the jazz genre, players have developed techniques such as overblows, which help to reach notes not otherwise available. Harmonicas that are most suitable for this technique tend to be those that are most airtight; our recommendations would be the Suzuki Manji, Hohner Crossover and the Seydel 1847 range.
How to Play Jazz Harmonica
Jazz is a musical genre that requires a significant investment in time in relation to playing ability and musicality in order to sound good. There's also quite a bit of theory to learn before improvisation is possible, because Jazz rarely sticks to simple major or natural minor scales. A good place to start is learning the 7 modes of the major scale, which is explained in detail at Learn Jazz Standards. Once you have learnt these, experiment with using the notes from them to create melodies and see which chords best fit with specific modes. Of course, this is only a starting point, and whole libraries could be filled with books just focusing on Jazz performance and techniques.
