Comprehensive range of harps, sent out promptly. My first point of call when looking for a new/different harp.
Jazz harmonica is most commonly associated with the chromatic version of the harmonica, as the major scale, which most Richter tuned diatonics are tuned to, is inherently limiting for a genre that utilises plenty of chromaticism. However, advanced players who have mastered overblows and large bends, are able to achieve full chromaticism on a diatonic harp; players such as Howard Levy, for instance, have shown that the limitations of a 10 hole diatonic can be overcome with expert technique, really opening up new possibilities for what is a relatively simple instrument.

3 Keys availableThe Seydel De Luxe Chromatic is a Harmonica with 12 holes, 48 notes and brown-tinted acrylic comb. The Standard tuning of the Chromatic Harmonica Purists among the players insist -and they stress- that the key of C is the only tuning necessary when playing 'Chrom'. They say, that a violinist also does not carry several tuned violins around to be able to play all classic works. This may be expected in a classic environment. However, not everybody practises 8 hours a day to overcome the limits of knowledge to play in all scales. Now, if you simply change your instrument you have them all available. This is why Seydel have made this model in a few keys. 2 Keys availableThe NONSLIDER Chromatic DE LUXE STEEL - playing chromatically re-thought Is there a chromatic harmonica ... ... with direct tone response like a Blues Harmonica? ... that works WITHOUT slider and WITHOUT valves*? ... on which techniques like bending or overblow are playable? The answer is YES. We name it the NONSLIDER Chromatic DE LUXE STEEL. The instrument is equipped with a newly designed mouthpiece that opens up many new possibilities for the players to play chromatically, no matter if they have played chromatic harmonica or diatonic blues harmonica before! The NONSLIDER Chromatic is a very reliable instrument that is virtually maintenance free. 48 tuning stable, stainless steel reeds guarantee a great sound and a long playing pleasure. Furthermore, stuck valves or a jammed slider are things of the past. * Please note: In order to achieve an optimal tone responses, the reeds of the LC, LD and LF variants, as well as the C 'Orchestra tuning' are equipped with valves (full and/or half-valving). Bending of certain half-valved notes is still possible - all valved blow notes can additionally be bent down in pitch. Overblows are not playable if the reeds are valved. How does the NONSLIDER Chromatic principle work? With the help of the newly developed double-row mouthpiece, the semitones are reached simply by tilting the instrument. A slight angling down or up is sufficient to reach all chromatic notes by directly playing the corresponding holes on the respective row. The notes on the lower row of holes are the same like in the "slide-pressed position" on standard chromatic harmonicas. The instrument is tilted down or up, or the player changes the position of his lips (pointed-mouth technique/lip-pursing) to reach the right notes. ... Read more

3 Keys availableThe Suzuki Sub30 Harmonica is a normal 10 hole harp, that has 20 reeds: two reeds in each hole (one blow & one draw). The 30 reed Suzuki SUB30 UltraBend harp has an extra Sympathetic Reed in each hole, one tone below the pitch of the lowest note. This reed is normally passive. It only becomes active when the player wants to bend the low note in each hole. (1-6 low & 7-10 draw). On a normal C harp in hole 4, you can get a bent note C# between C and D, but you cannot bend the C note. To bend C, you need a reed lower then C. That is the 3rd Sympathetic Reed of the Suzuki SUB30 UltraBend! In hole 4, this reed is tuned down to a Bb. That means you can now bend the C down to B! The same applies throughout the range. Every single low note in each hole can now be bent down a semitone! It is these 10 extra Sympathetic Reeds which allow you to play fully Chromatically by bending technique alone. This Easy, Soulful New Approach to Chromaticism on the Blues Harp is Addictive! In order to play a chromatic scale on the normal 10 hole harmonica (Below: 10H), you have to use difficult overblow/overdraw techniques, which require harmonicas with very delicate reed setup. The new Suzuki SUB30 UltraBend changes all that! Now you can get a chromatic scale by normal playing using a simple bending technique. With the SUB30 UltraBend, you can easily play phrases and music styles that you gave up on before, because you could not get some notes. The revolutionary new Suzuki SUB30 UltraBend harmonica gives you 18 bends of a semitone or more (instead of the usual 8 on a normal harp)! And these are all stable bends, easy to control at the correct pitch, bend up and down, add vibrato etc - just the same as the bends you're use to already. In addition to its chromatic ability, the SUB30 UltraBend you lots of extra expression on every note. Its fresh new possibilities will bring the creativity flowing out of you. The Same Size as a Normal 10 Hole Harmonica To achieve this compact size, Suzuki designed the major parts from scratch. The upper reed plate for a normal harp has 10 reeds. But using our precision slot cutting and unique reed-welding technology, Suzuki has managed to put 10 reeds in the same space! We also designed a special comb to fit the reed plates, The size of the mouthpiece is exactly the same as normal but the space inside each chamber is wide enough for 3 reeds instead of 2. This design is practical and functional, massively expanding your creative possibilities. With the Suzuki SUB30 UltraBend, Suzuki has created a powerful new tool of expression for the modern harmonica player. 10 holes 20 notes, 3 keys (C,A,D) Chrome plated brass cover Plastic Comb Weight: 70g Size: 104x30x22mm Comes with a plastic case ... Best Harmonica Jazz
This said, most players who wish to start experimenting with Jazz styles on the harmonica would be best served by a chromatic harp. Chromatics have two sets of reed plates tuned a semitone apart, and feature a button activated slide that directs air to the relevant reed(s). This means that not only is full chromaticism easily available, with no special techniques required, but also that rapid trills can be produced through quick manipulation of the slide. You can hear this in many of Stevie Wonder's harmonica solos, which also feature extensive use of vibrato.
Top choices for jazz harmonica are the Hohner CX12 Black and Jazz, Super 64, the Suzuki SCX range and Seydel's chromatic harmonicas. Players will want to look for at least 12 holes, with 16 being preferable, as they provide greater melodic range.
Best Diatonic Harmonica Jazz
To overcome the limitations of the 10 hole diatonic harp when playing in the jazz genre, players have developed techniques such as overblows, which help to reach notes not otherwise available. Harmonicas that are most suitable for this technique tend to be those that are most airtight; our recommendations would be the Suzuki Manji, Hohner Crossover and the Seydel 1847 range.
How to Play Jazz Harmonica
Jazz is a musical genre that requires a significant investment in time in relation to playing ability and musicality in order to sound good. There's also quite a bit of theory to learn before improvisation is possible, because Jazz rarely sticks to simple major or natural minor scales. A good place to start is learning the 7 modes of the major scale, which is explained in detail at Learn Jazz Standards. Once you have learnt these, experiment with using the notes from them to create melodies and see which chords best fit with specific modes. Of course, this is only a starting point, and whole libraries could be filled with books just focusing on Jazz performance and techniques.
