Classical

Harmonicas can be used to perform classical music as well as pop, jazz, folk and blues. Harmonicas that are used for this type of music generally fall into two categories: orchestral - where the harmonica is designed to be used as part of an ensemble, and will belong to a specific pitch range and timbre; and chromatic harmonicas, where the instrument is designed to occupy a similar musical space to other accompanied solo instruments, such as the flute.

Seydel De Luxe Chromatic Harmonica

£159.99

3 Keys available

The Seydel De Luxe Chromatic is the entry point to Seydel's chromatic harmonicas and is one of the least expensive German-made chromatics on the market. The basic design of the De Luxe Chromatic is the same as the De Luxe Steel Chromatic, and the reed plates are interchangeable. The main difference is in the reed material; the De Luxe Steel uses stainless steel, which is a feature of many of Seydel's more expensive harmonicas, whilst the standard De Luxe model uses traditional brass reeds. Stainless steel produces a brighter tone and has greater longevity than brass, but many players prefer the feel and sound of brass, and its use in the De Luxe does result in a considerably less expensive harmonica than its big brother. Build quality is as you would expect from the world's oldest harmonica company, and playability and tone are both first rate. An excellent choice of both a first chromatic or a workhorse harmonica for the experienced player. About Seydel Seydel is the world's oldest extant harmonica manufacturer, and has been producing harmonicas in Saxony, Germany for over 150 years. Hohner Super 64 Performance Series Chromatic Harmonica The original HOHNER Super 64 embodied the high end chromatic harmonica since it first came on the market. With the new Super 64, HOHNER upgrades this iconic instrument with a breathtaking design and a whole range of innovative features. The VarioSpring System permits individual adjustment of slide spring tension, while the revolutionary construction of the new SilentSlide is exceptionally airtight and almost completely silent in operation. In addition, the optimized comb chambers ensure the fastest possible response. The new Super 64 also sets new standards in durability and ease of maintenance. The reed plates are mounted with screws, without contact to the covers, reducing reed wear and making basic maintenance much simpler. The covers are attached separately and the nylon case provided also serves as a mobile work bench. Truly a giant step in the evolution of the chromatic harmonica. The new Super 64 features 1.2mm brass reed plates, an ABS comb, stainless steel cover plates and zigzag slide construction. It's solo tuned and has a full 4 octave range from C3 - D7. If you're a Stevie Wonder fan, and want to replicate his style, then this is the harmonica for you. Stevie used a Super 64, and later, it's sibling, the Super 64x, on many of his most famous recordings, and can still often be seen playing a Super 64 at live events. Its range and tone are key to Stevie's style of playing. About Hohner Hohner is one of the world's oldest harmonica manufacturers and has been producing harmonicas in Germany since the middle of the 19th Century. Its Marine Band diatonic harmonica has been used by many of the most famous harp players, from Sonny Terry to Bob Dylan, and its wide availability and relative inexpensiveness helped it to play a part in kickstarting the blues genre. Hohner hasn't rested on its laurels, though; although the Marine Band is relatively unchanged, the company has introduced many innovations, such as recessed reed plates, ABS combs and ergonomic chromatic harps.... The NONSLIDER Chromatic DE LUXE STEEL - playing chromatically re-thought Is there a chromatic harmonica ...  ... with direct tone response like a Blues Harmonica? ... that works WITHOUT slider and WITHOUT valves*? ... on which techniques like bending or overblow are playable?   The answer is YES. We named it the NONSLIDER Chromatic DE LUXE STEEL. This instrument is equipped with a newly designed mouthpiece that opens up many new possibilities for players to play chromatically, irrespective of whether they have played a chromatic harmonica or a diatonic blues harmonica before! The NONSLIDER Chromatic is a very reliable instrument that is virtually maintenance free. 48 tuning-stable, stainless steel reeds guarantee a great sound and durability Furthermore, stuck valves or a jammed slider are things of the past. In order to achieve optimal tone responses, the reeds of the LC, LD and LF variants, as well as the C 'Orchestra tuning' are equipped with valves (full and/or half-valving). Bending of certain half-valved notes is still possible - all valved blow notes can additionally be bent down in pitch. Overblows are not playable if the reeds are valved.   How does the NONSLIDER Chromatic principle work? With the help of the newly developed double-row mouthpiece, the semitones are reached simply by tilting the instrument. A slight angling down or up is sufficient to reach all chromatic notes by directly playing the corresponding holes on the respective row.     The notes on the lower row of holes are the same like in the "slide-pressed position" on standard chromatic harmonicas. The instrument is tilted down or up, or the player changes the position of his lips (pointed-mouth technique/lip-pursing) to reach the right notes.   Thus, full chromaticism is achieved without the need for a slide and spring mechanism!... Orchestral Harmonicas

When instruments are played as part of an ensemble, such as those in a traditional classical orchestra, a range of pitch ranges and timbres is required in order to provide overall clarity and balance. Orchestral harmonicas are no exception to this rule, and are defined by their range and type. At the lower end, bass harmonicas are designed to operate in a similar range to orchestral bass instruments, such as the double bass. Above this are tenor, baritone and soprano harmonicas, which are often complemented by chordal harmonicas, which provide the bigger sounds usually associated with the strings section in a classical orchestra.

The Best Orchestral Harmonicas

The best orchestral harmonicas tend to be made by established harmonica manufacturers in Germany and Japan. These include Suzuki, Tombo and Hohner.

What Type of Classical Harmonica Should I buy?

For solo performances with an accompanist, a 16 hole chromatic harmonica is usually the best choice, as it provides a wide pitch range and gives access to full chromaticism. Instruments like the Hohner Super 64, the Seydel Symphony 64, and the Suzuki SCX-64 will give access to the range of tones and notes needed for these types of performances without breaking the bank.

For ensemble work Tombo provides a range of relatively inexpensive bass and contra bass harmonicas, which cover the lower notes, whilst Hohner covers chordal and higher range harmonicas designed to play melody lines.

Famous Classical Harmonica Players

Perhaps the most famous of all classical harmonica players is the late, great Larry Adler, whose mastery of the chromatic led even Gershwin, after hearing Adler play Rhapsody in Blue, to pronounce that it seemed like it had been written specifically for Adler.

Over the years, Adler performed and recorded a large number of classical pieces, with his harmonica often taking the place of the solo violin.

Adler died in London in 2001, but he leaves behind a legacy of outstanding performances and can be credited with elevating the status of the chromatic harmonica to sit with serious traditional instruments.
