Rock
As rock is effectively derived from the blues, it's no surprise that the diatonic harmonica features in a significant number of rock songs. The most famous and, perhaps, unique harmonica sound in hard rock has to be Robert Plant's harmonica line in the Led Zeppelin song 'When the Levee Breaks'. Plant played this on the original recording on a Hohner Super Vamper in Bb, playing in second position to match the song's key of F. Reverse echo was added in post production to give the harmonica its trademark sound.

The archetypal blues harmonica with the traditional HOHNER tuning. The Marine Band Classic is one of the few Hohner diatonics that is available in a full range of natural and harmonic minor tunings. Hohner took this a step further by adding what is known as the “Blue Note”. This additional note adds a chromatic run for extra expression and is known to many as the “Blues Scale”. To play this scale on a standard harmonica you would have to perfect advanced techniques that could take years to master. Unlike standard Richter-tuned harmonicas, there is no need to play in 2nd position or “Cross Harp” position. The PentaHarp is straightforward in its tuning. You can play in the same key the song is in or the same harmonica can play a song in a major key if it is the relative minor. The notes are laid out in such a way that you do not need to draw bend, blow bend or overblow to play a useful scale! ... Read more

Like many other harmonica players in the 1960s and 1970s he played Hohner harmonicas - usually Marine Bands or Blues Harps - but more recently he has been seen playing Lee Oskar harmonicas, and even has a signature model produced by the brand.
Aerosmith frontman, Steven Tyler, has contributed countless harmonica lines to the band's hits, and like Mick Jagger, has had a signature harmonica made in his honour - in this case a 10 hole diatonic produced by Hohner with black cover plates engraved with his signature. His most famous harp work is probably on Aerosmith's power ballad classic 'Cryin'', which features a Dylanesque harmonica break towards the end of the song.
Best Harmonica for Rock
For general rock playing, a 10 hole diatonic from one of the major brands will be a good starting point. It's worth considering that playing rock in a band situation will usually require amplification, so budget for a decent mic, such as the Bulletini, an amp, and a harmonica, such as the Hohner Rocket Amp, that is designed for plugged in playing.
For those who want to replicate the sort of rapid riffs and solos that are normally played on electric guitar, alternate tunings can work well. Seydel offers two varieties of the Wilde tuning which are designed for major and minor rock riffs. Hohner offers the Pentaharp, which features the pentatonic tuning - something that will be familiar and intuitive to all rock guitarists.
