The Hohner Little Lady is the smallest harmonica in the World. It is fully playable and was the first instrument to be played in outer space in 1965. The Little Lady was made worldwide famous in 1965 when Walter Schirra, commander of the Gemini 6 manned space flight mission, used one to play “Jingle Bells” for the his team at Ground Control. With an overall length of only 3.5 cm (1.38 inches) it is the smallest playable series manufactured harmonica in the World and shares the same high technical standards as its larger siblings.

The Hohner Marine Band 1896 Classic harmonica is the original blues harmonica. Today it is still manufactured in much the same way as when it was first introduced in 1896. Its uniquely authentic sound has defined the role of the harmonica in the blues tradition and made it the benchmark by which all others are judged. Like the original Marine Band, the current 1896 model uses traditional long slot brass reeds, an open back and a pearwood comb to provide the warm and raspy tone beloved of blues, folk and country players throughout the world. Unlike older models, however, it doesn't use 7 Limit Just Intonation, but instead utilises a modern compromise tuning. This is closer to Just than many of Hohner's other harmonicas, such as the MS range, but still allows single note melodies to sound pure and sweet. The Marine Band Classic is one of the few Hohner diatonics that is available in a full range of natural and harmonic minor tunings. For low tunings, we recommend the Hohner Thunderbird, which has been designed from the ground up as a low tuned harmonica, but still has similar tone and feel to the classic Marine Band. Most 10 hole diatonics will work well for folk music, but it is probably wise to stick with Richter tuned harps (or derivations thereof, such as Paddy Richter), unless you're playing Eastern European folk, which utilises the harmonic minor. Some players look for a traditional sound and feel for playing folk, with wood comb harps, such as the Marine Band 1896 Classic, being particularly popular. Another great option, albeit one that is more pricey, is the Seydel 1847 Classic, which blends traditional looks and feel with state of the art German silver reed plates.
Harmonica Holders for Folk
Harmonica holders fit round the neck of the player and enable the simultaneous playing of guitar (or another similar instrument) and harmonica. Bob Dylan is perhaps the most famous exponent of this device, and many of his early, pre-electric performances involved the use of guitar and a harmonica holder.
Famous Folk Harmonica Players and their Harmonicas
Bob Dylan used a Hohner Marine Band for much of his early work, only moving to a Hohner Blues Harp in more recent years. For some years he also had a signature harmonica produced by Hohner, although this is really only a lightly modified Blues Harp with a nicer case.
Harmonica Folk Music
The harmonica has featured in folk music since the instruments invention in the 19th century, so there is a significant amount of folk music tabs (basic musical notation for the harmonica) available that shows how to play these tunes. A good resource for the is Learn the Harmonica, which has tabs for folk tunes such as 'Blowin' in the Wind' by Bob Dylan and traditional songs such as 'Danny Boy'.
How to Play Folk Harmonica
Folk music doesn't usually require bends in the same way that blues and rock harmonica does, so the focus is on single note melodies, sometimes accompanied by chords played at the lower end of the harmonica. This doesn't mean that it is an easier genre to play, however; many traditional Irish melodies, for instance, require great speed and dexterity from the harmonica player.
