Excellent customer service! My recent purchase required a couple of alterations in details and they were very responsive about it. Despite the changes in the order, the item actually arrived earlier than expected!

Folk

Folk music has been inextricably linked with the harmonica ever since the invention of the instrument. Its simplicity and the ability to pair it with a guitar, via the use of a harmonica holder, make it ideally suited to the stripped down sound of much folk music.

- C, G, A, D and Bb Hohner Rocket 5 Pack - C, G, A, D and Bb - Rock is many things – quiet is not one of them. For a harmonica to not be lost between squealing guitars and heavy drums, it has to be loud too. Which is why rock harpist Jimmie Bones relies on the power of the HOHNER Rocket. No other harmonica is this loud, while being this comfortable at the same time. Get ready to be blasted through rock, pop, jazz, and country with this incredibly powerful harp for advanced players. In terms of sound and feel, the Rocket is akin to a louder Special 20, with which it shares many of its features, such as the ABS comb and recessed reed plates. In fact, many players who prefer to the now discontinued Marine Band Series Special 20, prefer the Rocket and the Rocket Amp to the Progressive Series Special 20. This 5 pack of Rocket harmonicas includes the most popular keys and represents a significant discount over buying them individually. It also comes with a neoprene soft case that can carry up to 7 harmonicas. Optimized cover plates and larger channel openings Wide open cover plates with side vents and larger channel openings are specifically designed to generate a loud, powerful sound. Comfortable comb design The first serial production harmonica with rounded comb sides, edges, and corners for maximum comfort. The Best Harmonica for Folk?

Most 10 hole diatonics will work well for folk music, but it is probably wise to stick with Richter tuned harps (or derivations thereof, such as Paddy Richter), unless you're playing Eastern European folk, which utilises the harmonic minor. Some players look for a traditional sound and feel for playing folk, with wood comb harps, such as the Marine Band 1896 Classic, being particularly popular. Another great option, albeit one that is more pricey, is the Seydel 1847 Classic, which blends traditional looks and feel with state of the art German silver reed plates.

Harmonica Holders for Folk

Harmonica holders fit round the neck of the player and enable the simultaneous playing of guitar (or another similar instrument) and harmonica. Bob Dylan is perhaps the most famous exponent of this device, and many of his early, pre-electric performances involved the use of guitar and a harmonica holder.

Famous Folk Harmonica Players and their Harmonicas

Bob Dylan used a Hohner Marine Band for much of his early work, only moving to a Hohner Blues Harp in more recent years. For some years he also had a signature harmonica produced by Hohner, although this is really only a lightly modified Blues Harp with a nicer case.

Harmonica Folk Music

The harmonica has featured in folk music since the instruments invention in the 19th century, so there is a significant amount of folk music tabs (basic musical notation for the harmonica) available that shows how to play these tunes. A good resource for the is Learn the Harmonica, which has tabs for folk tunes such as 'Blowin' in the Wind' by Bob Dylan and traditional songs such as 'Danny Boy'.

How to Play Folk Harmonica

Folk music doesn't usually require bends in the same way that blues and rock harmonica does, so the focus is on single note melodies, sometimes accompanied by chords played at the lower end of the harmonica. This doesn't mean that it is an easier genre to play, however; many traditional Irish melodies, for instance, require great speed and dexterity from the harmonica player. To make this a little easier, some players opt for a special tuning that is specifically designed to facilitate the playing of these complex and rapid pieces of music - Paddy Richter
