Folk

Folk music has been inextricably linked with the harmonica ever since the invention of the instrument. Its simplicity and the ability to pair it with a guitar, via the use of a harmonica holder, make it ideally suited to the stripped down sound of much folk music.

Will Wilde Rock Harmonica Tuning SEYDEL Endorser Will Wilde is the inventor of this Special Tuning which is very well suited for "tougher" musical styles like Hardrock or Blues-Rock. Read here how this tuning was invented and why Will uses it regularely since a few years in his shows: "I designed the Wilde tuning specifically for playing hard rock and blues-rock on the harmonica. As much as I love the standard Richter tuning, I have always found it frustrating when it comes to playing “rock guitar” style licks, particularly in the upper octave.  The Wilde tuning addresses all of the problems I had with Richter, whilst still retaining the bluesy feel of classic second position harmonica that we all know and love. Whereas Richter tuning was primarily designed for playing major chords and the major scale in first position, Wilde tuning is specifically designed for playing second position minor pentatonic and blues scale licks, throughout all three octaves. I have always preferred the sound of draw notes and draw bends to blow notes and blow bends, as you can get more expression and a better tone & vibrato from them.  So, on the Wilde tuning ALL of the draw notes bend (from holes one to ten) and your root note lands on a draw in all three octaves. I think that the Wilde tuning is the configuration that every aspiring rock harp player has been waiting for."... Read more

Seydel Concerto Steel Octave Harmonica

£89.99

Seydel Concerto Steel Octave Harmonica - Seydel's best Richter-tuned Octave Harmonica with 40 stainless steel reeds for folky music and melodies of any kind. The CONCERTO STEEL is a high grade octave-tuned double-reed diatonic. The notes are aranged exactly like on a 10-hole diatonic (Richter tuning). The compact design and the typical full sonoric octave sound makes the CONCERTO STEEL the ideal musical companion for events of all kinds - the ideal pocket orchestra for assertive melody  and full chord playing. The CONCERTO STEEL has a divided comb made of maintenance-free plastic and profits from the approved stainless steel reeds well known for durability and tuning stability. Tuning stability is especially important for octave-tuned harmonicas where two reeds in one channel are either tuned exactly an octave apart. When drawing or blowing, the two reeds oscillate simultaneously, giving a full organ-like sound. Built-in windsavers (half-valving) minimize air loss, improve tone control and increase the overall volume while the playing pressure remains moderate. Stainless steel reeds ensure that the Concerto Steel outlasts conventional octave harmonicas with brass reeds, and provide a clear and bright tone. The CONCERTO STEEL comes in ten different keys and is the flagship of the SEYDEL STEEL OCTAVE series. About Seydel Seydel is the world's oldest extant harmonica manufacturer, and has been producing harmonicas and accessories in Saxony since the middle of the 19th Century. All of Seydel's harmonicas are produced in Germany, and most feature its signature stainless steel reeds, which provide unsurpassed durability and longevity. Many of our customers have found that Seydel harmonicas outlast equivalent harps with brass reeds by a factor of two or three. This represents a significant saving on replacement reed plates in the long term, and more than justifies the small additional expenditure over a harp with brass reeds. Seydel makes a wide range of harmonicas, from 10 hole diatonics through to 16 hole chromatics. ... Read more

The Seydel Favorite can hold its own with other top end harmonicas. It has a translucent anodised aluminium comb and stainless steel covers. Part of the Seydel Blues Series. Seydel Orchestra S Harmonica

£44.99

5 Keys available

The Seydel Orchestra S Harmonica is a 10 hole, solo-tuned diatonic Harmonica with corrosion-free stainless steel reeds (orchestra-tuning), ergonomic covers and carmine red plastic comb. As with the chromatic harmonica, all notes from the major scale are available throughout a two-and-a-half octave range. The Seydel Orchestra S Harmonica offers even more! Typically, the root note is found in hole 1-blow. The Seydel Orchestra S Harmonica places the root note at hole 3-blow, and half of the lower octave is added to holes 1 and 2. Since many players miss some of the notes on the standard Richter-tuned diatonic harmonica in the lower register the ORCHESTRA S allows them to hit the missing notes without having to apply a bending technique. The root note of the diatonic major scale is marked on the coverplate - it starts in 3 blow. This makes the ORCHESTRA S an ideal soloing instrument; the ten-hole design makes the Orchestra-S compact enough to take your melodies anywhere! The note layout is basically the same as that of a chromatic harmonica, making the ORCHESTRA S a great starting harmonica for learning to play a chromatic. The compact size combined with SEYDEL's durability makes the ORCHESTRA S a good choice for musical education in schools. The ORCHESTRA S opens new possibilities to blues harmonica players by making it easy to play minor pieces (3rd position) with a sound similar to solos played on a chromatic, thanks to the solo-tuning. They will also appreciate the extended major scale in the lower register. The root note of the dominant chord is available in the hole 1-draw, making it similar to playing in 2nd position on a standard Richter-tuned harmonica. Seasoned blues players will find all the notes of the blues scale through natural notes and bent notes, bringing soul and color to their blues improvisation. Solo-tuning in a ten-hole, compact harmonica Expanded tonal range in the lower register (Orchestra tuning) Stainless-steel reeds, coverplates, and screws combined for unparalleled durability (outlasting brass-reed models by up to five-times) Anti-corrosive, German-silver reedplates Lip-friendly, translucent carmine red plastic comb (ABS) with recessed reedplates Protective, full-grain leather pouch included ... If a single note is played two reeds that are tuned a little bit different start to operate together. As a result the floating tremolo sound is produced that has grown into a typical stylistic element of many different kinds of folk music on the harmonica. The Seydel Sailor Steel Tremolo harmonica is well suited for playing melodies or chord accompaniment. If played with the "tongue blocking" technique both can be done simultaneously and then the full and rich sound of the Seydel Sailor Steel is reminiscent of a big styrian accordion. 24 double-holes 48 Stainless Steel reeds (and rivets) with a very good pitch stability and a loud with full sound Body: divided, plastic black - non-corrosive and swelling-free Stable covers made of Stainless Steel Airtight reed plates made of German Silver (1.0mm) with very good flatness Weight: 134g (4.73oz ) Dimensions: 182 x 30 x 24mm (7.16 x 1.18 x 0.94inches)   The Seydel Sailor Steel Tremolo  – ambitious players of many traditional musical styles (Shanty, Alpenländische Volksmusik, Irish Folk, Classical, etc.) will not want to miss out on this fantastic instrument.... Seydel Session Steel - PowerDraw Tuning

£62.99

6 Keys available

The Seydel Session Steel harmonica is the upgrade to Seydel's successful Session model, and it comes presented with a bold new look and superior technical reliability, excellent playability and a fantastic sound. This is a blues harmonica with corrosion-free stainless steel reeds, ergonomic covers and plastic comb. This is the Powerdraw tuned Session Steel, however you can also get it in Paddy Richter, PowerBender, Melodic Maker, Circular/Melody King, Country, Natural Minor and Harmonic Minor. If you would like any of the other tunings please contact us. We also offer custom tuning such as equal temperament on special order. PowerDraw tuning is easy to learn because: The bulk of the harp (holes 1-6) stays exactly the same, so there is no need to re-learn anything in that meat and potatoes range you’re so accustomed to. The breathing pattern of holes 1-6 (blow reed low, draw reed high in each hole)is retained all the way up to hole 10 on the PowerDraw. This gives the top octave an instant feeling of familiarity to anyone who tries it, because the techniques and riffs that work so well lower down work up there too . Simplified Technique: There are no blow bends and no overdraws needed in the PowerDraw tuning. Two of the most important ‘blue’ notes in 2nd position (the flat third, which was overblow 6) and the flat fifth (overdraw 7) are now simple draw bends on holes 7 and 8. Every draw note bends from hole 6-10, soulful and easy! In un-valved setup every hole overblows, and the upper octave overblows are much easier than the overdraws necessary in Richter tuning. PowerDraw works well with the chordal octave-playing approach of tongue blockers. The notes in the top octave are similar to Richter, but the intervals are different. Because the chord splits sound nice and in-key, it is easy to adapt to. The PowerDraw works great in other positions too, especially Third (nice useful bends in the top octave), Fifth (good expression in the top end), Second Position Minor (no need to overblow to get the flat 3rd ), Eleventh and Twelfth (great expression in the top octave). If you feel familiar with playing in holes 1-6 on Richter diatonic already (or you play our BIG SIX model), the PowerDraw is a good choice for you! Ergonomic cover plates made of stainless steel, completely rounded at the mouthpiece ABS comb with recessed German Silver reed plates Rivets and screws made of stainless steel Lips and beard-friendly design Minimal air consumption achieved by fine-cut reed plates, optimised flatness and extremely small tolerances between reed and reed plate Stainless steel reeds provide the best clear and full sound and response of the 1847 models Up to 5 times longer playing life compared to models with brass reeds Comes with a genuine leather pouch Tuning: PowerDraw ... Seydel Session Steel - Wilde Rock Tuning

£60.99

7 Keys available

Seydel Session Steel - Wilde Rock Tuning - SEYDEL Endorser Will Wilde is the inventor of this Special Tuning which is very well suited for "tougher" musical styles like Hardrock or Blues-Rock. Read here how this tuning was invented and why Will uses it regularly since a few years in his shows: "I designed the Wilde tuning specifically for playing hard rock and blues-rock on the harmonica. The SESSION STEEL is the upgrade to our successful SESSION model is presented with a bold new look and superior technical reliability, excellent playability and a fantastic sound. Details about Wilde Rock special tuning: Holes one to five are exactly the same as standard tuning.   Holes six, seven and eight are the same as holes two, three and four (just an octave higher).   Hole nine is the same as hole two (two octaves higher) and the reeds in hole ten have been switched around (so that the ten blow bend is now a draw bend).  This makes fast minor pentatonic/blues scale runs much easier and means you no longer need to overblow/overdraw to get the flat third and flat five in the upper octave as they are now available as simple draw bends.... Seydel Session Steel Harmonica - Circular Tuning

£54.99

12 Keys available

Circular tuning variant: all notes of the scale are arranged "logically" and can be reached by alternately blowing and drawing. Therefore it is possible to play up to 12 different chords. For the same reason, it is not so easy to clearly assign the key in which the harp is labeled in. Seydel Session Steel Harmonica Summer Edition 2019

£41.99

6 Keys available

Seydel Session Steel Harmonica Summer Edition 2019 - The Summer Edition Session Steel is back for 2019, and this year it comes with a mint coloured comb. The Summer Edition retains all of the great features of the standard Session Steel, including German silver reed plates and stainless steel reeds, which can last up to 5 times longer than traditional brass reeds. The fine cut reed plates, extremely flat comb and tight tolerances ensure that there is minimal air loss. This makes the Session Steel very easy to play. Many players like to buy a Summer Edition Session Steel each year in a different key - the variation in comb colour then enables them to easily distinguish the various keys in low light situations, such as gigs. Other players just prefer the special edition harps colour combos to the standard orange combed Session Steels. Either way, we think that this year's mint green comb looks especially good. The Summer Edition harps are only available for a short time. When the production run is finished they won't be available, so make sure you grab one while you can! They're available in the six most popular keys and come with a brown leather pouch with white stitching.  ... Read more

The Best Harmonica for Folk?

Most 10 hole diatonics will work well for folk music, but it is probably wise to stick with Richter tuned harps (or derivations thereof, such as Paddy Richter), unless you're playing Eastern European folk, which utilises the harmonic minor. Some players look for a traditional sound and feel for playing folk, with wood comb harps, such as the Marine Band 1896 Classic, being particularly popular. Another great option, albeit one that is more pricey, is the Seydel 1847 Classic, which blends traditional looks and feel with state of the art German silver reed plates.

Harmonica Holders for Folk

Harmonica holders fit round the neck of the player and enable the simultaneous playing of guitar (or another similar instrument) and harmonica. Bob Dylan is perhaps the most famous exponent of this device, and many of his early, pre-electric performances involved the use of guitar and a harmonica holder.

Famous Folk Harmonica Players and their Harmonicas

Bob Dylan used a Hohner Marine Band for much of his early work, only moving to a Hohner Blues Harp in more recent years. For some years he also had a signature harmonica produced by Hohner, although this is really only a lightly modified Blues Harp with a nicer case.

Harmonica Folk Music

The harmonica has featured in folk music since the instruments invention in the 19th century, so there is a significant amount of folk music tabs (basic musical notation for the harmonica) available that shows how to play these tunes. A good resource for the is Learn the Harmonica, which has tabs for folk tunes such as 'Blowin' in the Wind' by Bob Dylan and traditional songs such as 'Danny Boy'.

How to Play Folk Harmonica

Folk music doesn't usually require bends in the same way that blues and rock harmonica does, so the focus is on single note melodies, sometimes accompanied by chords played at the lower end of the harmonica. This doesn't mean that it is an easier genre to play, however; many traditional Irish melodies, for instance, require great speed and dexterity from the harmonica player. To make this a little easier, some players opt for a special tuning that is specifically designed to facilitate the playing of these complex and rapid pieces of music - Paddy Richter
