About Fender Fender Musical Instrument Corp can trace it origins to Leo Fender's original business - Fender Radio Service, which was involved in the repair and maintenance of PAs and radio equipment. Experiments with the lap steel guitar in the 1940s led to them changing their name to Fender Instruments, and  producing one of the earliest solid body electric guitars - the Telecaster. This led to the development of their most famous guitar - the Stratocaster - which helped to shape popular music throughout the 1960s and beyond. Harmonicas are a recent addition to the Fender portfolio of instruments, but the Blues Deluxe has the same level build quality, playability and tone you would expect from any product from the "Big F".... Hohner Blues Harp MS

£35.99

12 Keys available

The brand name ”Blues Harp® “ has attained cult status in the contemporary music scene. The Hohner Blues Harp MS model features a functional design combining a wooden comb, high covers without side vents and high quality reed plates to give the instrument its typical bluesy sound, which has made it immensely popular with beginning and intermediate players alike. Every now and again, a branded article achieves such a high degree of success and widespread distribution that the brand name becomes synonymous with the generic product. This has certainly been the case with the Hohner Blues Harp®, now well into its fifth decade as one of Hohner‘s most popular diatonic model. Part of the MS range of modular harmonicas, the Blues Harp shares some of its features, such as the reed plates, with the Pro Harp and Big River, with which all of its parts are interchangeable. The major difference between the Blues Harp and its MS siblings is the doussie wood comb, which provides a slightly warmer sound than the ABS comb on the Pro Harp and Big River, or the alloy comb on the Meisterklasse MS. Tuning is slightly closer to equal temperament than on the Special 20 or Marine Band models, making this the ideal harmonica for playing single note runs. Reeds: 20. Reed Plate: Brass, 0.9mm. Keys: C Major, Db Major, D Major, Eb Major, E Major, F Major, F# Major, G Major, Ab Major, A Major, Bb Major, B Major. Comb: Wood. Series: Modular System. Plastic snap box. ... Read more

The Hohner Little Lady is the smallest harmonica in the World. It is fully playable and was the first instrument to be played in outer space in 1965. The Little Lady was made worldwide famous in 1965 when Walter Schirra, commander of the Gemini 6 manned space flight mission, used one to play “Jingle Bells” for the his team at Ground Control. With an overall length of only 3.5 cm (1.38 inches) it is the smallest playable series manufactured harmonica in the World and shares the same high technical standards as its larger siblings. Note: This is the German made version of the Little Lady, featuring a pearwood comb, not the Chinese made plastic comb model, which, in our view, is inferior. Hohner Marine Band 1896 Classic

Hohner Marine Band 1896 Classic

£32.99

32 Keys available

The Hohner Marine Band 1896 Classic harmonica is the original blues harmonica. Today it is still manufactured in much the same way as when it was first introduced in 1896. Its uniquely authentic sound has defined the role of the harmonica in the blues tradition and made it the benchmark by which all others are judged. Like the original Marine Band, the current 1896 model uses traditional long slot brass reeds, an open back and a pearwood comb to provide the warm and raspy tone beloved of blues, folk and country players throughout the world. Unlike older models, however, it doesn't use 7 Limit Just Intonation, but instead utilises a modern compromise tuning. This is closer to Just than many of Hohner's other harmonicas, such as the MS range, but still allows single note melodies to sound pure and sweet. The Marine Band Classic is one of the few Hohner diatonics that is available in a full range of natural and harmonic minor tunings. For low tunings, we  recommend the Hohner Thunderbird, which has been designed from the ground up as a low tuned harmonica, but still has similar tone and feel to the classic Marine Band. Should you wish to replace reed plates on the Marine Band Classic, we recommend upgrading to the Andrew Zajac Marine Band Conversion Kit, which replaces the stock nails with a bolted setup, and makes the process of changing reed plates significantly easier. Original cover design from 1896 ensures the classic blues sound Greatly reduced swelling behaviour through double-coated pear wood comb Reeds: 20 Brass Reed Plates: 0.9mm brass Comb: Pearwood, brown Mouthpiece: pearwood lacquered Cover surface: Stainless steel Made in Germany Check the Key for additional tuning options: Natural Minor & Harmonic Minor  ... Hohner Harmonicas

Hohner Marine Band Crossover Harmonica

£64.99

13 Keys available

The Hohner Marine Band Crossover is the top of the line standard tuned harmonica within the brand's Marine Band series of traditional wood comb harps. Responding to the needs of professional players who wanted an instrument that combined the tone and feel of a wood comb with the swell resistance and durability of modern designs like the Special 20, Hohner created the Crossover, which features a unique bamboo comb, and precision-tuned reed plates, all wrapped up in a compact, Marine Band style body. The laminated bamboo comb gives the Crossover an exceptionally light feel in the hands, and also allows for class - leading flatness. This greatly facilitates airtightness, which makes the Crossover an extremely responsive harp, with easy access to precise bends, and the ability to overblow, if required. In fact, it is one of the most airtight production harmonicas on the market, meaning that less of your effort is lost to leakage, allowing even beginners to start bending notes almost immediately! The comb also features Supaglide lacquer applied to all surfaces, which not only adds an extra barrier to moisture, but also greatly facilitates the playing of rapid licks as the surface is ultra smooth and friction free. The Crossover's temperament is a modern compromise tuning - marginally closer to equal temperament than the Marine Band 1896 or Deluxe. This makes it ideal for single note melody playing, whilst maintaining the ability to play chords. Tolerances between reed and reed plate are exceptionally good on this harp, as is the consistency of reed adjustment, making this feel more like a custom harmonica than an off the shelf model. 7 Keys available

NOTE: All keys except now in stock. The PentaHarp is built for all musicians, not just harmonica players! If you have every tried to learn the harmonica before and were confused with the note layout, this harmonica is for you. The PentaHarp’s intuitive design is easier to understand so you don’t have to use advanced techniques to get the notes that you know will work. You can play melodies and solos effortlessly! The Pentatonic scale is one of the most useful scales in popular music. Guitarists know this scale as “Playing in the Box”. Play any of these notes in the right key and you can’t play a wrong note. Hohner took this a step further by adding what is known as the “Blue Note”. This additional note adds a chromatic run for extra expression and is known to many as the “Blues Scale”. To play this scale on a standard harmonica you would have to perfect advanced techniques that could take years to master. Unlike standard Richter-tuned harmonicas, there is no need to play in 2nd position or “Cross Harp” position. The PentaHarp is straightforward in its tuning. You can play in the same key the song is in or the same harmonica can play a song in a major key if it is the relative minor. The notes are laid out in such a way that you do not need to draw bend, blow bend or overblow to play a useful scale!   ... Read more

Harmonica Pop Songs

Perhaps the most famous of all uses of harmonica in a pop song, is John Lennon's playing on The Beatles' early hit 'Love Me Do'. Although this lends itself well to being played on a diatonic, it was actually recorded on a chromatic, as Lennon, at the time, had not mastered the bending technique necessary for the tune.

Other famous pop songs where the harmonica is a standout feature often involve Stevie Wonder, both on his own recordings and as a guest. Examples of the former include 'For Once in My Life' and 'I Was Made to Love Her', whilst the latter includes The Eurythmics hit 'There Must be an Angel'.

Best Harmonica for Pop Music

Pop is an extremely broad church, and covers a whole host of genres, but most players should probably gravitate towards a standard Richter tuned diatonic, or a chromatic. The only exceptions to this rule are for minor key songs, where a natural minor harmonica might suit the piece of music better, and when players prefer the note layout of the Melody Maker tuning, which is well suited to the single note lines that are often found on the harmonica parts of pop songs

Chromatics are particularly useful for pop songs, as they can offer an alternative to the guitar or keyboard solo, whilst providing interesting texture to a song. Think, for example, of any of Stevie Wonder's harmonica - led hits; they just wouldn't sound anywhere near as good with an alternative instrument playing the harmonica line.

Our recommendations for diatonics for playing popular music are the Hohner Rocket Amp - which is great for amplified playing in a band situation - and the Lee Oskar Melody Maker, whose note layout is perfect for single note melodies. For chromatics, it's hard to beat the Hohner Super 64 and Super 64X, which are essentially the same harmonicas that the great Stevie Wonder uses.

80s Pop Harmonica

The harmonica's heyday in popular music was probably the 1980s, where, for example, it featured prominently on one of the biggest global hits of the decade - Karma Chameleon, and was often found in the mix of a New Romantic band's new tune.
