Seydel Session Steel Harmonica Summer Edition 2019

£41.99

6 Keys available

Seydel Session Steel Harmonica Summer Edition 2019 - The Summer Edition Session Steel is back for 2019, and this year it comes with a mint coloured comb. The Summer Edition retains all of the great features of the standard Session Steel, including German silver reed plates and stainless steel reeds, which can last up to 5 times longer than traditional brass reeds. The fine cut reed plates, extremely flat comb and tight tolerances ensure that there is minimal air loss. This makes the Session Steel very easy to play. Many players like to buy a Summer Edition Session Steel each year in a different key - the variation in comb colour then enables them to easily distinguish the various keys in low light situations, such as gigs. Other players just prefer the special edition harps colour combos to the standard orange combed Session Steels. Either way, we think that this year's mint green comb looks especially good. The Summer Edition harps are only available for a short time. When the production run is finished they won't be available, so make sure you grab one while you can! They're available in the six most popular keys and come with a brown leather pouch with white stitching.  ... Read more

Suzuki Bluesmaster Harmonica

£27.99

12 Keys available

The Suzuki Bluesmaster is a professional level 10 hole diatonic harmonica with a plastic comb and stainless steel covers. In common with most other Japanese made Suzuki harmonicas, the Bluesmaster features phosphor bronze reeds, which provide outstanding projection and durability. The stainless steel covers are designed with durability and ergonomics in mind, making the Bluesmaster an instrument that is a joy to hold and one that will outlast many lesser harmonicas. Construction-wise, and in pricing as well, the Bluesmaster is comparable to the Hohner Special 20, and like its competitor it features non vented covers and recessed reed plates. Tonally, it produces a slightly warmer sound than the Hohner. Its responsiveness, particularly to bending, is very similar. Volume levels of the two harps are also very similar. Like all Suzuki harps, the manufacturing tolerances are very high, resulting in superb airtightness. This enables the Bluesmaster to respond well to dynamics within your playing and makes precise bending a much easier task. Reed and cover plate alignment are also excellent, making this a great harmonica for beginners as well as more experienced players. The ABS plastic comb offers swell-free performance, making the Bluesmaster an easy harmonica to live with, especially for gigging musicians who need a harp that delivers great tone, but who don't want the fuss of managing moisture levels on multiple harmonicas. The Bluesmaster is available in the 12 standard major keys. A boxed set, which includes the 6 most popular keys, and which offers a discount over buying these keys individually, is available here. This set comes with a foam-lined case that holds the harmonicas in position, allowing easy access to them. Suzuki Manji Harmonica (Richter and Natural Minor Tunings)

£63.99

18 Keys available

The Suzuki Manji harmonica combines advanced technology and functional beauty to create a stunning 10 hole diatonic harmonica. This revolutionary Suzuki diatonic harp is named after Mr. Manji Suzuki, who is the company's founder, and, although elderly, is still actively involved in the management of the company. He started Suzuki Music more than 70 years ago, and initially hand built just a single model. Subsequent investment and expansion eventually led to Suzuki becoming one of the world's most respected manufacturers of harmonicas. The Suzuki Manji harmonica is unique in its use of a composite comb, which utilises wood fibres encased in impermeable resin to combine the tone and responsiveness of wood with the resistance to moisture expansion and easy maintenance of plastic. The phosphor bronze reeds are extremely durable and each instrument is built and assembled with incredible attention to detail. This is evident in its extremely high level of airtightness and the fine tolerances of reed and slot alignment. Consequently, the Suzuki Manji harmonica plays, out of the box, as well as many custom harps, and has an ability to combine power with finesse that few other harmonicas, even at significantly higher price points, are able to achieve. The Suzuki Manji Harmonica is available in the full range of standard major keys plus low tunings. For players wishing to purchase the three most popular keys - C, G and A, a multi-pack is available here, which offers a discount when compared with buying these keys individually. Suzuki Manji Sky Harmonica

£59.99

7 Keys available

The Suzuki MANJI SKY seeks the lightest breath and tone sensations among SUZUKI 10-hole harmonicas. To achieve this, SUZUKI has developed a newly designed reed. You'll particularly feel the characteristics of this MANJI SKY sound when you play in the mid-bass range, which is often used with 10-hole diatonic harmonicas. The material used for the MANJI SKY is a synthetic composite mixed with specific wood fibres. This combines the warm tone of wood with the durability of synthetic materials. Wood has countless small spaces, which expl its traditional warm tone. The solid body reinforced with wood fibres produces a warmer sound than that created by an ABS body. What's more, the Manji Sky's body transmits vibrations, giving the impression that the whole harmonica is ringing! Finally, there's no deformation due to humidity, thanks to the Blue wood-resin body.... Read more

Suzuki Olive Harmonica

Suzuki Olive Harmonica

£56.99

14 Keys available

The Suzuki Olive harmonica has modern slightly vented cover-plates that have a bright olive colour, achieved through the use of a high tech process that doesn't utilise any colouring material, ensuring lasting durability and a clear tone. Hybrid Wood-Resin Comb Historically, most harmonicas had wooden combs. This type of comb provides a warm tone, but is prone to absorbing moisture, leading to warping and deformation over time. Many manufacturers responded to this problem by creating a plastic comb, which solves the issue of expansion, but which results in a different tone to wood. Suzuki, in contrast, created a wood-resin composite material for the comb, which is composed of over 50% wood fibres encased in impermeable resin. This provides the tone of a traditional wooden harmonica with the swell resistance of plastic. First utilised on the popular Manji diatonic, this comb has been widely praised by players. Made in Japan Air-tightness is incredibly important in producing a harmonica that is both easy to play and responsive. Suzuki harmonicas use state of the art manufacturing processes to ensure an extremely high level of airtightness. As a consequence, the  Suzuki Olive responds rapidly to quick phrases, and provides excellent responsiveness to bends. Suzuki is unique in its utilisation of a welded-reed process, which ensures an extremely high level of accuracy of reed attachment and reed/slot alignment. This enables the reeds to respond to advanced techniques, such as over-blowing, to achieve consistently rich and exciting sounds. These achievements are a consequence of Suzuki's adherence to the Japanese tradition of 'Kaizen', which involves seeking continual, incremental improvements in all areas of a harmonica's production, from manufacturing through to assembly and quality control. Tone-wise, the Olive is similar to the Manji, with which it shares the same composite comb material. It's vent design, however, is different, which gives it a subtly warmer sound. 24The Suzuki Promaster harmonica (MR350) is one of our most popular upper end diatonics, and is part of the professional range by Suzuki Music. It features ergonomically designed, polished stainless steel reed covers, which provide supreme playing comfort. The comb is precision milled from billet aluminium, then given a satin anodised finish for durability and ease of playing. This provides it with a similar tone to other harmonicas which feature the same comb construction, such as the Seydel Noble, plus outstanding resistance to warping and temperature and humidity related swelling, which can afflict many wooden combs.  Phosphor bronze reed plates, which are a signature of most Japanese-made Suzuki harps, produce the rich tones and clarity so sought after by professional players, and also offer great durability and lifespan. As you'd expect from a Suzuki, airtightness is first class, and the attention to detail in its construction is class-leading. Harpists who try a ProMaster often find that it rapidly becomes their 'go-to' instrument for all styles of music, such is its ease of playing and responsiveness. Suzuki Promaster Valved Harmonica

£49.99

13 Keys available

The Suzuki Promaster Valved harmonica is the valved version of the popular MR-350 diatonic harp from the Japanese company. It uses the same polished stainless steel reed covers and satin finish anodised aluminium comb as the standard Promaster, and is similarly comfortable and responsive to play. Where it differs from the MR-350 is in its use of an innovative valve system, which enables bending in the blow as well as the draw cycles. This opens up a whole new world of playing, as the range of notes available is closer to that of a chromatic harmonica than a standard diatonic. The aluminium comb provides the Promaster Valved with exceptional resistance to warping and excellent responsiveness.  Phosphor bronze reed plates, which feature on most Japanese made Suzuki harmonicas, produce the clarity and richness of tone you'd expect from an instrument at this level, whilst also offering class-leading durability. Suzuki is renowned for its attention to detail and the Promaster valved is no exception. Manufacturing tolerances are extremely fine, resulting in a harp with exceptional airtightness and projection. Few harmonicas in this price bracket can compete with the Promaster Valved when it comes to volume! Yet, at the same time, it responds very well to subtle playing dynamics. Like the standard model, the Promaster Valved comes with a custom designed, soft lined hard case, which will help to ensure that your harp remains in perfect condition when it's not being used. The Promaster Valved is available in the 12 standard major keys, plus high G and Low F. It only becomes active when the player wants to bend the low note in each hole. (1-6 low & 7-10 draw). On a normal C harp in hole 4, you can get a bent note C# between C and D, but you cannot bend the C note. To bend C, you need a reed lower then C. That is the 3rd Sympathetic Reed of the Suzuki SUB30 UltraBend! In hole 4, this reed is tuned down to a Bb. That means you can now bend the C down to B! The same applies throughout the range. Every single low note in each hole can now be bent down a semitone! It is these 10 extra Sympathetic Reeds which allow you to play fully Chromatically by bending technique alone. This Easy, Soulful New Approach to Chromaticism on the Blues Harp is Addictive! In order to play a chromatic scale on the normal 10 hole harmonica (Below: 10H), you have to use difficult overblow/overdraw techniques, which require harmonicas with very delicate reed setup. The new Suzuki SUB30 UltraBend changes all that! Now you can get a chromatic scale by normal playing using a simple bending technique. With the SUB30 UltraBend, you can easily play phrases and music styles that you gave up on before, because you could not get some notes. The revolutionary new Suzuki SUB30 UltraBend harmonica gives you 18 bends of a semitone or more (instead of the usual 8 on a normal harp)! And these are all stable bends, easy to control at the correct pitch, bend up and down, add vibrato etc - just the same as the bends you're use to already. In addition to its chromatic ability, the SUB30 UltraBend you lots of extra expression on every note. Its fresh new possibilities will bring the creativity flowing out of you. The Same Size as a Normal 10 Hole Harmonica To achieve this compact size, Suzuki designed the major parts from scratch. The upper reed plate for a normal harp has 10 reeds. But using our precision slot cutting and unique reed-welding technology, Suzuki has managed to put 10 reeds in the same space! We also designed a special comb to fit the reed plates, The size of the mouthpiece is exactly the same as normal but the space inside each chamber is wide enough for 3 reeds instead of 2. This design is practical and functional, massively expanding your creative possibilities. With the Suzuki SUB30 UltraBend, Suzuki has created a powerful new tool of expression for the modern harmonica player. 10 holes 20 notes, 3 keys (C,A,D) Chrome plated brass cover Plastic Comb Weight: 70g Size: 104x30x22mm Comes with a plastic case ... Harmonica Pop Songs

Perhaps the most famous of all uses of harmonica in a pop song, is John Lennon's playing on The Beatles' early hit 'Love Me Do'. Although this lends itself well to being played on a diatonic, it was actually recorded on a chromatic, as Lennon, at the time, had not mastered the bending technique necessary for the tune.

Other famous pop songs where the harmonica is a standout feature often involve Stevie Wonder, both on his own recordings and as a guest. Examples of the former include 'For Once in My Life' and 'I Was Made to Love Her', whilst the latter includes The Eurythmics hit 'There Must be an Angel'.

Best Harmonica for Pop Music

Pop is an extremely broad church, and covers a whole host of genres, but most players should probably gravitate towards a standard Richter tuned diatonic, or a chromatic. The only exceptions to this rule are for minor key songs, where a natural minor harmonica might suit the piece of music better, and when players prefer the note layout of the Melody Maker tuning, which is well suited to the single note lines that are often found on the harmonica parts of pop songs

Chromatics are particularly useful for pop songs, as they can offer an alternative to the guitar or keyboard solo, whilst providing interesting texture to a song. Think, for example, of any of Stevie Wonder's harmonica - led hits; they just wouldn't sound anywhere near as good with an alternative instrument playing the harmonica line.

Our recommendations for diatonics for playing popular music are the Hohner Rocket Amp - which is great for amplified playing in a band situation - and the Lee Oskar Melody Maker, whose note layout is perfect for single note melodies. For chromatics, it's hard to beat the Hohner Super 64 and Super 64X, which are essentially the same harmonicas that the great Stevie Wonder uses.

80s Pop Harmonica

The harmonica's heyday in popular music was probably the 1980s, where, for example, it featured prominently on one of the biggest global hits of the decade - Karma Chameleon, and was often found in the mix of a New Romantic band's new tune.
