Andrew Zajac Custom Dark Comb - Golden Melody (Gen 1)

Andrew Zajac Custom Dark Comb - Golden Melody (Gen 1)

£24.99
Andrew Zajac Custom Dark Comb (First Generation Golden Melody, not the Gen 2 Model) is made from an earth-friendly composite of 100 per cent recycled paper, resin produced from naturally occurring raw materials and selected natural pigments. This material is strong, dense, waterproof, hypoallergenic, and does not emit any volatile organic compounds, including formaldehyde. It has been certified food safe, contains no petroleum-based chemicals and doesn't have an odour. Note - colour is not specified, but if you have a specific preference, let us know in the notes section of your order. These combs have all the benefits of a flat, unsealed Pearwood comb with none of the drawbacks. This material allows Andrew to focus on flatness without compromising the look and feel. The affordable price reflects how manageable it is to produce excellent combs out of this material. But don't be fooled - these are the very best combs. We do not know of any material that is better suited for harmonica combs. Dark combs™ have a glossy smooth front for comfortable playing. The sides and back of the Dark combs are lightly polished to a matte finish which has a nice appearance and feels comfortable to hold. Over time and with use, these surfaces will develop their own natural shine as they become worn in. Dark combs™ do not shatter when dropped on the floor, and their production has a much lower environmental impact than most other man-made materials. Many types of materials including Corian, brass or other metals can make the harmonica sound very bright. Dark combs help your harmonica produce the fat, dark, woody tone you get from a harmonica with an unsealed Pearwood comb. Why replace your harmonica's comb? To improve the instrument. An airtight harmonica is easier to play and has better tone. But simply switching the comb will not make it play better. A flat comb is only one part of making your harmonica more airtight. Harmonicas require a minute or two of preparation work before combs can be installed. These combs offer superior air tightness. They focus on high performance and do not compromise quality for ease of installation. Instructions and support is included with the purchase of combs. Unsealed Pearwood combs, when perfectly flat, are the model of excellence. Unfortunately, they do not last and will break down and warp with time.... Read more

Andrew Zajac Embossing Tool

Andrew Zajac Embossing Tool

£29.99
Andrew Zajac Embossing Tool - (New version 2021-06!) This tool is made from tempered high-carbon steel and both tips are finished by hand. The tips are carefully sharpened to the correct specification to allow it to emboss the slot effectively without shredding or otherwise damaging the slot. I ensure that each tip is perfect. Embossing increases the efficiency of the reed as it goes through the slot. By using a tool to press down onto the edges of the slot, a small ridge of metal is created in the slot. This ridge decreases the space between the reed and the slot. The closer tolerance will cause the reed to make more sound and require less breath force to activate. To benefit most from embossing, you need to emboss the entire slot. For a quick shortcut, see these instructions on only embossing half of the slot. Full-length slot embossing can be easy! The embossing tool is effective on stainless steel as well as brass reed plates. I recommend using a mineral oil when using this tool. If you over-emboss a slot, the presence of oil also speeds up the process of plinking and clearing away burs. The tool is made small because embossing is more about precision than force. Apply pressure with your fingers instead of the weight of your arm and you will save time and have a lot of success. The tool can be groomed with some fine sandpaper once in a while to keep it in working order for a very long time - at least several hundred harps. You won't have to worry about wearing it out.... Andrew Zajac Extended French Tuner

Andrew Zajac Extended French Tuner

£25.99
Andrew Zajac Extended French Tuner - You don't need bulky, expensive and complicated equipment to tune your harmonica with great precision. The French Tuner™ helps you use your mouth and ears to quickly tune the blow reed plate of a diatonic harmonica. The French Tuner™ helps you eliminate beating and provide smooth chords. Perfect tuning can only be achieved with both reed plates are attached to the comb and with a lot of attention to detail. But for most players, the French Tuner™ provides excellent results after just one pass. It's the quickest and easiest way to improve the tuning of the blow plate. Its precision design allows the French Tuner to work on all major brands of 10-hole diatonic harmonicas including Seydel (which have wider spaced holes) and many 12-hole harps. It will not fit the larger Hohner 364 and 365 harmonicas but contact me if you are interested in a French Tuner that is custom made to fit these harmonicas. The French Tuner is not just for tuning! Use it to speed up other important tweaks: - Use the French Tuner to help adjust reed profiles. The French Tuner will isolate a reed while the plate is off the comb and allow you to play the reed to assess and make fine-grained changes to reed shape. Pucker or tongue-block embouchure can be used to best help you adjust your reeds to your playing style. - The French Tuner will help you with embossing. If you are a player who doesn't like the sound of a tightly embossed harmonica, make fine-grained adjustments to the slot while using your ears. Gradually emboss the slot until you reach the sweet spot where you get maximum responsiveness without making the tone too bright. - The French Tuner is perfectly flat and can be used as a reference to improve air seal. Use the French Tuner and a source of bright light to look for uneven areas of the blow reed plate.... Read more

Andrew Zajac Flatness Tool and Reed Plate Claws

Andrew Zajac Flatness Tool and Reed Plate Claws

£45.99
Andrew Zajac Flatness Tool and Reed Plate Claws - Use these tools to flatten the comb and reed plates. Straight, flat reed plates fitted to a flat comb are the best framework for the reeds. Even a thousandth of an inch of space between the comb and reed plate means the reed will be less efficient at converting air flow into decibels. With a good frame, the reeds can function the way they are supposed to. Want even more power? A good frame also means reed work becomes much simpler because all sides of the slot are at the same level and are well supported. A good foundation is mandatory for best results when doing reed work. The Flatness Tool™ is used to measure flatness. It is an extremely precise straight edge reference. It has a reed groove so that it can be used on both reed plates as well as the comb. One you find where the comb or the reed plate is not flat, you can correct it. The Flatness Tool™ can also be used to make combs extremely flat. My method of flattening combs is very easy to learn with a little practice. There is no guesswork involved since you are using a proper reference as your guide. My Dark combs are the flattest combs on the market. Use this tool to make any other sandwich-type comb just as flat as mine. Use the Reed Plate Claws™ on both the blow and draw reed plates. Straighten the draw plate before flat sanding it. On the blow plate, the reeds get in the way of flat sanding so all you need to do is straighten them using the reed plate claws. You may use the edge of a reed plate to check the flatness of the other plate. However, I do not recommend using a reed plate to gauge the flatness of a comb. You will likely get false measurements which will lead to over-sanding the comb as you try to correct what you believe is a defect. It's not easy to undo oversanding - this type of feedback loop can be fatal. The Reed Plate Holder will help you hold the reed plate steady as you straighten it with the Reed Plate Claws. Once you get comfortable with the claws, you may no longer need the Reed Plate Holder. It has two slots to accommodate many different sizes of reed plates. Use the smallest slot that fits. The Reed Plate Holder ships with a sticker on the under side. The adhesive will help hold the plate in place. Once it loses its stickiness, you can peel it off and replace it with any kind of tape you have on hand. If you no longer need the additional help from the adhesive, don't bother replacing it.... Hohner Marine Band 1896 Classic
Hohner Harmonicas

Hohner Marine Band 1896 Classic

£32.99

32 Keys available

The Hohner Marine Band 1896 Classic harmonica is the original blues harmonica. Today it is still manufactured in much the same way as when it was first introduced in 1896. Its uniquely authentic sound has defined the role of the harmonica in the blues tradition and made it the benchmark by which all others are judged. Like the original Marine Band, the current 1896 model uses traditional long slot brass reeds, an open back and a pearwood comb to provide the warm and raspy tone beloved of blues, folk and country players throughout the world. Unlike older models, however, it doesn't use 7 Limit Just Intonation, but instead utilises a modern compromise tuning. This is closer to Just than many of Hohner's other harmonicas, such as the MS range, but still allows single note melodies to sound pure and sweet. The Marine Band Classic is one of the few Hohner diatonics that is available in a full range of natural and harmonic minor tunings. For low tunings, we  recommend the Hohner Thunderbird, which has been designed from the ground up as a low tuned harmonica, but still has similar tone and feel to the classic Marine Band. Should you wish to replace reed plates on the Marine Band Classic, we recommend upgrading to the Andrew Zajac Marine Band Conversion Kit, which replaces the stock nails with a bolted setup, and makes the process of changing reed plates significantly easier. Original cover design from 1896 ensures the classic blues sound Greatly reduced swelling behaviour through double-coated pear wood comb Reeds: 20 Brass Reed Plates: 0.9mm brass Comb: Pearwood, brown Mouthpiece: pearwood lacquered Cover surface: Stainless steel Made in Germany Check the Key for additional tuning options: Natural Minor & Harmonic Minor  ... Andrew Zajac Marine Band Conversion Kit

£5.99

Out of stock

Andrew Zajac Marine Band Conversion Kit contains all of the parts you need to convert your 1896 Classic to a more robust and user friendly bolted setup. Almost every harmonica player had owned a Marine Band 1896 harmonica. They are the traditional gold standard diatonic harmonica. For many, the fact they are assembled with nails can cause a problem if you want to improve the comb, perform reed work or embossing. This kit provides you with the necessary stainless steel screws and nuts as well as instructions to convert a Marine Band 1896 from nails to all-screw assembly. (A pairing knife to open the Marine Band 1896, a drill and other commonly available supplies are not included with this kit but are easily obtainable.) Nuts are used instead to adding the extra steps of tapping (creating a thread) the draw plate to speed up the process. This simplified approach is the easiest way to convert from nails to screws. Contains: Six Stainless Steel M2 screws for the reed plates and the cover plates Six Stainless Steel M2 Nuts One checklist to help you through the process Three screws hold the reed plates to the comb and two more hold the covers on to the reed plates. Only five screws and nuts are needed for this job but an extra set is included just in case... These screws have a Phillips head - No need to buy a weird-tipped screwdriver to use these!... Read more

Andrew Zajac Reed Replacement Kit

Andrew Zajac Reed Replacement Kit Includes: - Stainless steel reed replacement screws (75 pieces screws and washers) - M1.4 tap and pin vise - 3/64" drill bit - Reed removal spine - Hardened and tempered O1 steel reed removal pin - Flattening pin - Rivet bar Two types of screws are provided. 5mm Phillips head screws are easy to handle but require trimming once in place. The shorter flat head screws are harder to pick up with your fingers but don't need to be cut. (Dip your screwdriver in Vaseline to make the tiny screw stick to the tip!) Washers are a big help to keep the reed in place as you tighten the screw. With a little practice, you won't even need to use a washer. You will need some extra items. These items are so common that I chose not to include them in the kit to keep the cost down. They are easily found at a hardware store for less than a total of £10. Items you will need (not included): - Small Phillips head screwdriver - flush cutting pliers - A brick or a small anvil; or something else that's flat and heavy. At a minimum, you need two pounds of weight. The more mass you have under your reed plate, the easier it will be to do the job. - Flat sanding surface (a flat board and a sheet of 220 grit sandpaper - the same thing as in preparing a reed plate for a flat comb) and a little extra sandpaper. - 1/16", 5/64" and 3/32" drill bit - small hammer - A reed wrench (you won't find this in a hardware store... Click below to add one to the kit.) - New reeds. You can scavenge a new reed from another reed plate or contact Hohner or Seydel and buy individual reeds from them.... Read more
